Honestly, I think this is a much healthier thing than actual helicopter parenting. When I think of a helicopter parent, I think of a parent who keeps their child on a figurative leash, providing them no room to grow, to be independent, or to explore the world on their own terms.

What you're doing -- this whole "parenting by app" thing -- gives your kids a taste of independence without sacrificing your supervisory duties as a parent.

In other words, it sounds like the best of both worlds! Your kids get to experience the liberating feeling of being on their own, while you still get to keep an eye on them from a distance and make sure they aren't doing anything crazy or stupid. That seems like a pretty good deal for both you and your kids. :)
