I’m sorry you had to deal with that, Katie. And I agree — I think it’s a combination of factors, including immaturity and a sort of self-righteous arrogance, that leads to people behaving that way.

One of the few self-evident truths about life (in my opinion, anyway) is that everyone is wrong about something. Progressives, conservatives, white folks, black folks, men, women; not a single one of us is 100% correct about 100% of the issues. That’s why I think disagreement is often a good and necessary thing; how else are we going to figure out what we’re wrong about? We have to have people in our lives who are willing to challenge us from time to time and force us to reflect on our beliefs. Generally speaking, it’s a totally normal and healthy part of the human experience. But not everyone feels that way, like the young women you mentioned in your comment. Sounds like they’re a bit too sure of themselves and could use a healthy dose of humility.

But so thanks a ton for reading the piece and commenting! And if you’re ever in the mood for a little friendly debate or discussion, just say the word. I promise no “mean girl” tactics from me lol. =)
