Incredible piece, Elizabeth. I've never read anything that approached the universal healthcare issue from a purely philosophical perspective. Most of the thought pieces that I've come across either don't deal with the relevant philosophical questions at all, or they just take the ethical foundation for a universal system for granted instead of actually trying to construct one themselves.

P.S. If I may ask, do you have any strong feelings about the impact of single-payer on medical innovation, drug development, etc.? As a supporter of universal health care but an opponent of single-payer, my biggest concern has always been that moving to single-payer could slow down the development of new treatments, cures, and technologies to a substantial degree.
