Interesting piece, Andrew. Manchin’s politics make a lot more sense to me now. I really thought that his vote on Kavanaugh might be the move that finally turned the entire Democratic Party against him, but it would seem that he’s the one who holds all the cards. If they did turn their backs on him, they’d essentially be giving up on WV entirely, and so they really have no choice but to accept him for what he is. It’s a really odd relationship for a politician to have with their party, but that’s politics for ya.
