Playing the press against Mary, creating a narrative that she’s losing her mind and circulating that narrative among the general public — that’s a remarkably awful thing to do to a friend, regardless of the intention!!!

And I imagine that the drama she went through with Robert when he had her hospitalized made the rumors about her mental health all the more believable in the eyes of the public, which just makes it so much worse. Gaslighting your friend is bad enough. Gaslighting your friend and the entire nation at the same time? That’s some next-level nastiness right there. I really don’t want to believe that they could do that to her, but at the same time, it certainly does seem to explain why the press couldn’t get their story straight when it came to Mary’s financial situation.
