As for my take, I think Sonmez totally overreacted. Was the joke inappropriate? It depends on your perspective, but I do see why some people were offended by it. It's not a joke I'd tell in an office, for sure. But Twitter isn't an office, and I really dislike the idea that retweeting a mildly offensive joke on Twitter can score you a one-month suspension from your job. Though to be fair, everyone knows now that you can face serious professional consequences for what you put out on social media under your name, so Weigel probably should have known better.

In any case, I think if you have a problem with something a coworker tweets, it's best to approach them in private first and have an adult conversation about it. Had Sonmez done that, she would probably still have a job (she got fired after I published this piece) and Weigel never would've been suspended.
