That sounds so familiar to me. I grew up in the ‘burbs, went to school in the city. Virtually all of my Republican friends and relatives are the “coastal conservative” types — left-leaning or centrist on social issues, conservative on fiscal issues. And like your friend, almost none of them voted for Trump. The only one I know who did is an old friend of mine who I’ve known since high school. It didn’t affect the friendship, though. He had my back at a time when no one else did, and I’ll always be grateful for it. I know he’s a damn good guy, just sees the world through a very different lens than most because of some unique life experiences.
