The most agonizing part of my daily walk is when I encounter someone else coming down the sidewalk. Do I say hello or keep my eyes to the ground? I instinctively want to say hi. It just seems like the polite thing to do. But if that other person doesn’t reciprocate, it gets really awkward really fast, and I can’t get away from them quickly enough, lol. It’s such a weird dynamic, and it didn’t used to be this way 15 or 20 years ago. But yeah, these days, unsolicited interactions are more likely to be viewed as some sort of threat rather than the friendly gestures they’re usually intended to be. It’s a real shame, but it is what it is.
