This is precisely what I think is happening inside his mind (and the minds of lots of other credible critics of U.S. foreign policy). And like you said, some folks just can't get past that tension and feel like they're doing something wrong by acknowledging both truths, so they end up choosing one at the expense of the other. But you're right; they don't invalidate each other or cancel each other out!
